To decorate a dining table, keep the middle low and the surface mostly clear: one or two small vases or a plant, a runner or placemats, and room for the serving dishes. Choose a centrepiece you can see over, so family dinners stay easy and everyone at the table can talk.

It is wedding season, winter hosting is starting and Diwali guests are still fresh in memory. For most Indian families the dining table does three jobs in a week: a quiet everyday meal, a Sunday family lunch and a spread for guests. In many flats the same table is also the desk and the homework corner. Decor has to work for all of that. This guide covers what to keep on the table daily, how tall a centrepiece should be, how to set it for guests, what suits a small 4-seater and what to spend. For a different surface in the same home, see our guide to console table decor ideas.
What should I keep on my dining table every day?
The everyday table should look finished and still be ready to eat at. Think of it as three layers: something to protect and frame the surface, one small centrepiece and a practical item or two that earn their place.
- A runner or placemats. A cotton or linen runner down the middle, or four to six placemats, makes a plain table look set even with nothing else on it.
- One low centrepiece. A pair of small vases with dried cotton stems, or a small plant. The Roll Ceramic Vase Set of 2 (Rs. 999) is a good example: matte white or lavender, with one vase 14 cm wide and 9 cm tall and the other 16 cm wide and 13 cm tall. Both stay well below eye level when you sit at a dining table.
- A little green. The Deer Set with Glass Pots (Rs. 699) has two gold powder-coated metal deer stands, each 18 cm long, 10 cm wide and 18 cm tall, holding clear glass pots. Succulents, air plants, or just pebbles and moss all suit them, and the clear glass lets you see the plant, not a pot.
- Something you use. A salt-and-pepper pair, a bowl of fruit, or a butter box. The Ceramic Butter Box with Spreader Knife (Rs. 1,299) is matte ceramic with a bamboo lid that doubles as a small board, and the knife rests in a groove. It comes in white, navy or cyan. The listing says hand wash only, not microwave safe.
That is the whole list. Leave the rest of the table clear for plates, katoris and the water jug. A crowded table starts to look busy by the second meal.
How tall should a dining table centrepiece be?
Low enough that people can see each other across the table. A common rule of thumb is to keep a centrepiece below about 30 cm, and lower on a smaller table where everyone sits close. A dining table stands about 75 cm high and a dinner plate is about 27 cm across, so a 9 cm or 13 cm vase sits comfortably in the middle without competing with the plates.
If you love a tall vase, do not give it up. Put it on the sideboard or at the end of a long table, away from where people sit. A tall piece in the middle makes conversation harder, because guests lean around it to talk.
Here is how the idea changes with table size.
| Table size | Centrepiece idea | Mapland pieces | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-seater | One slim vase with a single stem, on a runner | Twin Wave Vase (Rs. 1,149), or one of the Roll vases | Leave space for plates, katoris and a jug |
| 6-seater | A low pair or trio down the middle, vases and a plant | Roll Vase Set of 2 (Rs. 999) plus the Deer Set with Glass Pots (Rs. 699) | Keep gaps between items so dishes can be passed through |
| 8-seater | A longer row of low items, or a runner with three small groups | Roll Vase Set of 2 and Guise Abstract Face Vase Set (Rs. 1,199) | Leave the middle clear for serving dishes when guests are over |
How do I decorate a dining table Indian style for guests?
A guest table in an Indian home is first about the food. Dal, sabzi, rice, chutneys, raita and sweets all need somewhere to go, and many families serve family style, so the middle of the table is working space. The decor has to move over for the food, not fight it.
- Set the low centrepiece first. Place it where it will stay, then plan the dishes around it.
- Use proper serving dishes. They look more intentional than the steel container straight from the kitchen. The Teal & Gold Ceramic Serving Dish (Rs. 1,299) is round and shallow, in glossy peacock teal with a gold rim and two gold loop handles. It is 20 cm wide handle to handle and 5 cm tall, and is listed as microwave, dishwasher and food safe, so it works for a green chutney, a sabzi or a bowl of nuts.
- Add a second dish with sections. The 2-Section Porcelain Serving Dish with Wooden Handle (Rs. 1,649) pairs an oval and a round bowl in glossy cream with a thin gold rim and a natural wood handle. It is 35 cm long with the handle, 10 cm wide and 5 cm tall. Two chutneys, or a dip and a crunchy side, fit in one place.
- Keep plates and napkins plain. Teal and gold carry the colour, so quiet neutral plates let the dishes stand out.
- Add warm light. A diya or a few tea lights near the centrepiece, kept away from dried stems, make a table look festive in the evening.
You can see these pieces in person at our Gurugram store, which is handy when colour is the question, because teal and gold look different on a screen than on your own table.
What decor suits a small 4-seater dining table?
On a small table, one slim object works better than several small ones. A cluster of three items can take up the whole middle and leave the family passing katoris over it.
- One vase, one stem. The Twin Wave Ceramic Flower Vase (Rs. 1,149) is 24 cm tall and 15 cm long, in matte charcoal black or beige. A single dried stem, or even an empty vase, is enough.
- A runner, not a tablecloth. A narrow linen runner frames the middle and keeps the edges free for plates.
- Move the extras to a corner. Keep the butter box, a fruit bowl or a salt pair on one corner and put them away when you eat.
- Use the wall or sideboard. If the table is also the work desk, keep most decor on a nearby shelf.
Try this tonight, free
You do not need to buy anything to set a better table tonight. Take three things you already own and use them as a group, the runner-and-three trick:
- Lay a dupatta, a clean cotton stole or a folded tea towel down the middle of the table as a runner.
- Pick three things of different heights, all below about 30 cm: a bowl of seasonal fruit such as oranges or pomegranates, a clean glass bottle with two or three stems from a balcony plant, and a small steel katori with a tea light.
- Put the tallest item in the middle and the other two beside it, leaving gaps. Switch on a warm lamp rather than the tube light.
The table now looks set, nothing new needs washing, and everything goes back to the kitchen after dinner.
How do I keep a dining table centrepiece practical?
A centrepiece that is a nuisance gets moved to the shelf and stays there. A few habits keep it in use.
- Choose dried over fresh for everyday. Dust settles on everything in many homes, and fresh flowers need their water changed. Dried stems in a matte vase need only a quick wipe.
- No water in matte vases. The Roll, Twin Wave, Guise and Kotoba vases we stock are for dried stems, pampas or cotton stems, or to stand empty. They are not meant to hold water for long. For fresh stems for one evening, use a plain kitchen glass.
- Keep food on food-safe pieces. Serve from the serving dishes, not from vases, glass pots or the deer stands.
- Keep it movable. A pair of small vases is easier to lift off for a big meal than one heavy piece.
- Wipe, do not soak. A soft dry or slightly damp cloth is enough for a matte ceramic vase. Check each product page for care before you clean.

Frequently asked questions
What are some simple dining table decor ideas for everyday?
Keep it low and clear. A small vase of dried stems or a small plant in the middle, a runner or placemats, and nothing that blocks the view across the table. A bowl of seasonal fruit works too, and costs nothing.
How tall should a dining table centrepiece be?
Low enough that people can see each other across the table. A common rule of thumb is to keep it below about 30 cm, or lower on a small table where everyone sits close. Tall pieces can go on a sideboard or at the end of a long table.
How do I decorate a dining table Indian style for guests?
Keep the middle simple and give the food the space. Use a low vase or plant, plain plates, and one or two serving dishes for chutneys, dips and sweets, with katoris on the side for family-style serving. Add warm light with a diya or a tea light.
What decor suits a small 4-seater dining table?
One slim piece, such as a single slim vase with one stem, on a narrow runner. Skip a wide centrepiece, because the table needs room for plates, katoris and a water jug.
Can I put water in these ceramic vases?
No. The matte vases we mention are meant for dried stems, pampas or cotton stems, not for prolonged water. If you want fresh stems for an evening, put them in a plain kitchen glass instead.
Which dining table decor items are food safe?
Only the serving pieces are made for food. Our Teal & Gold Ceramic Serving Dish is listed as microwave, dishwasher and food safe. Vases, glass pots and deer stands are decor and should not hold food.
What can I spend on dining table decor?
Mapland pieces in this guide start at Rs. 699 for the Deer Set with Glass Pots. A simple everyday table can be styled for under Rs. 1,000, and a guest-ready table with a centrepiece and two serving dishes comes to a little over Rs. 3,000 at today's prices.
How do I keep a dining table centrepiece from collecting dust?
Dried stems in a vase need only a quick dusting, which is easier in many homes than changing water for fresh flowers. Wipe the vase with a soft dry cloth and shake the stems gently outdoors now and then.
